I confess: my motivation for establishing Theater Christians is selfish.
I have been looking for communities of Christian theater people—but I haven’t found any. Unlike our brothers and sisters in the film world who have established multiple networks of Christian film artists, I have found no such presence for Christian theater artists.
The Christian world seems to have turned out the lights on theater–but I don’t believe God wants us to give up such valuable, influential territory. In our disconnected virtual world, nothing matches or surpasses live theater. The magic of live performance cannot be duplicated by artificial intelligence for either the audience or the performers.
We need skillful playwrights who love God and can create insightful new stories that show biblical truth rather than tell it. We need actors, directors, designers and other theater artists who can bring those stories to life with excellence. But more than anything, we need each other.
I would like this community to evolve into a vibrant hub of fellowship and collaboration for Christian playwrights, directors, actors, designers, and other theater artists. I want to see new and authentic plays and musicals developed and see those playwrights connectwith theater groups anxious to locate and produce such work.
I dream of seeing life-long friendships forged, and multitudes of audience members being inspired, entertained, and edified by truthful, authentic stories that they can never forget.
Do you feel the same way? If so, please join me so that we can “stage Light” together.
